What Causes PDF Corruption?

PDF corruption most commonly happens during file transfer or download. If a download is interrupted — due to a network drop, browser crash, or timeout — the file may be truncated: it has all the beginning content but is cut off partway through. This breaks the PDF's cross-reference table, which normal viewers need to navigate the file.

Other causes include storage media errors (corrupted sectors on a hard drive or USB drive), improper PDF creation by third-party tools, file conversion errors, and email transfer issues that modify the binary content of the attachment.

What this tool cannot fix: If the file header is completely overwritten (the file is not recognized as a PDF at all), if page content streams are missing entirely, or if the file was encrypted with a lost password. In those cases, the original source — the application or system that created the PDF — is the only recovery option.
