PNG vs JPG — Which Should You Choose?
The choice between PNG and JPG comes down to the type of content you're working with. PNG uses lossless compression — every pixel is stored exactly as rendered, making it ideal for PDFs that contain text, diagrams, charts, logos, line art, or any content with sharp edges and solid colors. PNG files are larger but look perfect at any zoom level.
JPG uses lossy compression, discarding some image data to achieve smaller file sizes. This is usually invisible in photographic content but creates visible artifacts (blurring, halos) around sharp text and line art. For most PDF content — which tends to be document-style with text and graphics — PNG is the better choice.
PNG also supports transparency (alpha channel), which is useful if the PDF page has a transparent background. This allows the PNG to be layered over other content in design tools like Figma, Canva, or Photoshop without a white box around it.
